IWA and ESAWAS sign Memorandum of Understanding

The International Water Association (IWA) and the Eastern and Southern Africa Water and Sanitation Regulators Association (ESAWAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 14 September 2022 during the IWA World Water Congress & Exhibition in Copenhagen to promote a strategic and cooperative relationship between the two organisations.

The MoU establishes that both parties are recognised as a source for leading-edge water knowledge in the region and as actors connecting practices to policy. The shared goal underlined in the MoU is to improve regional cooperation promoting the development and diffusion of innovation while supporting the implementation of the SDGs.

This includes effective collaboration in reshaping the global agenda on Inclusive Urban Sanitation – involving working on innovative solutions and service-oriented areas that contribute to the progression of water and sanitation management, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

About  ESAWAS

The ESAWAS Regulators Association begun in 2007 with an informal meeting of regional WSS regulators. The Association is now governed by a Constitution ratified by the members since 2010 and meets annually to deliberate various issues of mutual interest. The objectives of the ESAWAS Regulators Association are to foster and enhance regional cooperation and coordination on regulatory issues by: 1) Capacity Building and Information Sharing Facilitate information sharing and skills training at national, regional and international level to enhance the capacity of members in WSS regulation; 2) Regional Regulatory Cooperation Identify and encourage the adoption of best practices to improve the effectiveness of WSS regulation in the region.
